Well, I'm about 20 weeks pregnant with my 3rd - feeling ok, thank god I don't feel as nausteated now as I did for the first 16 weeks. The only thing I could eat was Kub rye bread and cheese slices. Oh and I also developed a love affair with baloney - Burns, blue label, to be exact. I'm afraid I might end up giving birth to a big bag of sodium.

My first started kindergarten, and I have been crying a lot. And also drowning my tears with shopping trips to Home Sense and Old Navy and anywhere else that will accept my credit card. He loves school, and I am happy for him, and I can only hope that my tears will slowly dissipate as the days pass!

Lavish Lamb will be doing 3 shows this fall, which I am busy preparing for - Scattered Seeds at the end of October (yikes - gotta get my booth built!!), Signatures Craft show at the convention center at the end of November, and a little craft show at the beginning of December at the Tuxedo Community Center. I haven't done Signatures or Tuxedo before, so I am excited to check those both out. I just ordered some new fabrics for some blankets -- what do you think?

I am not sure how this will all work out since I'll be quite pregnant and large. Not to mention hot, sweaty and irritated in general. (Ha...I'm only half kidding..)

We spent the summer doing projects in the yard - fence, some landscaping, flower beds (still a work in progress.) And we should have some guys working in the house for a few weeks in October, which I am NOT looking forward to, but at the end of it all, I'll have a working wood fireplace and some new windows....

I am sure the whole process will NOT go smoothly and I'll probably have a few meltdowns. I'll keep you posted, or perhaps you'll see me in the news. One or the other.

Jaime

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lavishlamb.blogspot.com/2011/09/whew-where-has-time-gone.html' title='Whew! The mornings become darker as we move through August, and I start thinking about the things I like about fall. I would even admit that I look forward to autumn....only for a moment, because then I remind myself that after fall comes WINTER...and winter is ok, but MUCH TOO LONG. But, I digress.

I, am known to my friends, as a fairly warm-blooded gal...let's be truthful here...I consider myself to be a sweaty kind of chick, and so summer makes that a lot worse for me. (I have been known to refer to myself as a sweaty piggy, from time to time!) Unless I am on a tropical vacation, where sweating is made a little more bearable by bikinis and vodka sodas, humidity = irritation.

But, cooler weather is coming, and coming fast, so I need to grab onto to the last bit of hot weather we have coming to us. But fall...how lovely will it be when I can wear a long sleeved shirt and NOT feel like a sausage in its casing??

For me, when fall hits, I get this crazy urge to cook and bake. Last night I was flipping through my Julia Child cook books, having a glass of red wine, and making a mental list in my head of what I want to cook first. (That reminds me...need to stock up in some butter...lots of it.)

I started to think about the cook books I have and which ones I LOVE to use. And which ones I still really want.

TO BUY:

This one is apparently a MUST have if you want to get better at making Italian food - and authentic Italian..not Olive Garden Italian, if you know what I mean.

Ditto for these ones - on the Mexican front. Must Haves I am told. Definitely NOT Taco Time.

Ok - this one seems kind of lame. Nothing exciting here. But, this one, over times has apparently proven itself to be an indispensable manual. It has THOUSANDS of recipes....you can probably learn to do most anything from this one.

My current Faves:

Julia Child's Mastering the Art books.....everything I have tried turns out lovely, and she goes through things in such detail, with black and white drawings to help you with technique. (Man, I love butter....if you buy this book, stop by the grocery store and load up on your way home.)

Donna Hay - any of her books! I love flipping through them and getting inspired. The recipes are delish, and the pictures make me salivate. (Oh, so now I am drooling and sweating. Double the fun.)

Martha Stewart's Cupcakes and her Cookies books. I have made some stuff out of there and they have turned out quite well. The pictures help me figure out what I really have to make, and I love the way the books are organized. (Side note - I am reading an unauthorized bio on her - I think from the 90's. If is is only ONE QUARTER true, Miss Stewart is a horrible person and for sure will be going straight to hell. I hope she knows how to fashion a bikini out of her premium silk coffin lining, because I hear it's hot down there.)

The Bon Appetit cookbook (the big orange one) and Bon Appetit Fast Easy Fresh ( the big green one) - both of these are good ones to flip through. They have tons of recipes, and everything I've made is yummy. There are no pictures, but that would be impossible because there are SO many recipes.

I have so many other ones - Nigella Lawson's, Gordon Ramsay's, some Jamie Oliver....but I don't usually use those ones as much. (Of course, I don't just have celebrity chef cookbooks..but those are the ones that come to mind right now.)

I WILL go as far to say, that I DO NOT have ANY Rachel Ray....I know, I know, there are lots of people that LOVE her and might think I am daft for totally dissing her. But come on - a garbage bowl isn't some big grand idea, and "stoup" (stew/soup) and EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) make me want to punch the TV. I guess you could say she annoys me. Oh yeah, and I think her food looks like slop or vomit half the time (That's "slomit" to you Rachel Ray.)

What else can I say? I think once fall hits, my food and wine consumption increases considerably. But it's not my fault. I blame Mother Nature. Bring on the french onion soup and pitcher of red.

Jaime

Mompreneur Award! Not only were there delicious sandwiches, (you know, the cute little ones we all love,) but there was wine (high five!) and an inflatable pool. What, you ask? I know, inflatable pool doesn't necessarily fit into our whole "baby shower" picture, but my auntie thought it would be a good way to keep the kids busy. I can't even believe that the rain let up and the sun came out...but it did!

There was a lot of "hey, maybe it would be a good idea to dump that bucket of water on that adult's head" and "let's spray people in the face with these water pistols." Um...was it recent?

Yes...right. I did go away - ok, ok. I can't be too catty here - I went with my husband and kids to Barbados for 2 weeks. Funny...it doesn't seem like it was only last month. And it doesn't seem like it was for 2 weeks. Why does that happen anyway - time flies by when you are doing something fun, and when you, say, are doing squats, 30 seconds feels like 1 year. (Awwww, squats...I knew I forgot to do something today.)

Of course, as all of you moms out there can relate to, my baby girl came down with a nasty chest cough 2 days before were to hop on the plane. So, I thought, I might as well take her to the doc and maybe he can do something to help her out. Liquid medicine, a puffer inhaler and 80$ later, I was armed with everything I needed to banish the phlegm. Naturally, the medicine was hard on my daughter's stomach, so she had serious "issues" for the first 5 days of our vacation. The airplane ride there was a freaking nightmare - my daughter was miserable, my son was antsy, and the dirty diapers kept coming. My poor husband was the lucky one who got to stand in line for the tiny airplane bathroom to try and wedge himself in - I can barely change a diaper in there - not sure how he managed! At one point, he made his way back to our seats after changing Isla, and by the time he got back, he had to go wait in line again. I think we were both questioning the whole vacation in general - really? More poo? More whining? Is this a good idea? Is this even going to be fun???

We finally arrived in Barbados, and the heavy, hot air hit us like a ton of bricks. All I could think about was getting my bathing suit on and hitting the pool. But, before we could even get our bags and grab a taxi, we had to wait in a 50 minute line to get through customs. That's 50 minutes - with 2 hot, tired kids. (And, I should mention that I am getting a little scared because my army-sized stash of diapers has dwindled down to basically nothing....)

But, we made it, finally to our rental apartment. And I am happy to say that it was exactly as advertised - NO SURPRISES! It worked out really well. We had a main floor patio, right on the pool deck, and we had a first floor balcony, overlooking the ocean. There is nothing like sitting out with your coffee, or, ahem, beverage, and watching the sea. We even saw some turtles off in the distance.

Some highlights:
1. Fisherman's Pub in Speightstown - eat like a pig for about as cheap as it gets. Home made, delish, and totally lovely. Ice cold Banks. yes.

2. Oistin's fish fry - see #1. Plus music.

3. Crane Beach - can't afford Crane resort? That's ok - do like the rest of us and cross the patio-stone covered rocks to this wonderful beach. And jumping off the cliff is totally fun - maybe 25 feet up - so not too crazy! And stop by Cutters deli on the way to pick up a fabulous lunch for your day at the beach - and they have yummy rum punch. And I don't even like rum!

4. Miami Beach - very beautiful and calm - perfect for kids. The water is literally like bath water, and about as still. Mikhail and I ran after schools of flying fish (he kept saying he wanted to eat them - flying fish sandwiches are kind of a big deal over there, and very good.)

5. Wildlife Sanctuary- turtles and crocs and monkeys...oh my! Not to mention peacocks, iguanas, deer, jack rabbits, birds, a huge snake...and they're all running around. Well, not the crocs and the giant snake! But monkeys were walking by me, like 6 inches away from me, and massive turtles lumbered by, doing their own thing. Mikhail had a great time. I really liked how it didn't feel like a zoo - it felt like you were walking around the jungle, on these cute, little brick paths.

6. Macaroni pie.

7. Bajan Jerk sauce, and the spicy yellow mustard sauce that you could find at any food stand. Addictive!

8. Driving. On the "wrong" side of the road - and we didn't have any close calls!

9. St. Lawrence Gap - busy with people and nightlife, lots of restaurants. (I should admit...I think we were only up past 10pm ONE night - but in our defense, Isla was up at 5am every morning, and she reverted back to newborn-mode and screamed for a bottle every 2 hours.)

10. Angry Annies - a very quaint restaurant in Hole Town. It's on this little street, that you would miss if you weren't really watching for it. It felt more like a back lane, and it was packed with Zagat rated eateries. At Angry Annies, I ate the best fish of my life - not kidding - blackened mahi mahi with perfectly mashed garlic potatoes and seasonal veg. The owner seated us and took our order, and was really wonderful. Bright blue walls, and wall fans as air conditioning. Very cool.

11. sangria. home made. very enjoyable.

12. We got to spend a ton of time with Mikhail in the pool. He is getting so much more comfortable in the water! With his little life jacket on, he was swimming the whole length of the pool, jumping in, putting his face in the water...

To Do:
Must find an authentic carribean/bajan cook book. Must replicate rum punch, fried flying fish, macaroni pie, jerk pork and others. (I've made these things, or something like them, before, but they're just not the same!)

Ahhhh.....just thinking about our trip makes me feel relaxed. So, the trip, the poop, the crying......was all worth it. And not only that, Mikhail had a ton of fun and we got to spend some precious time with our kids - who before we know it, will be driving, dating (gulp) and will be too busy....
Jaime

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lavishlamb.blogspot.com/2010/05/how-was-my-vacation-umwas-it-recent.html' title='How was my vacation? (I also made this with half chocolate chips and half pecans, which was nice too.) I like this recipe because there's not a lot of fat in it, and also, I can't stand beating or making sour milk, which so many banana muffin recipes need...

Preheat the oven to 350F. Grease the muffin tin (12). Into one bowl, put 2 cups of all purpose flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 3 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp baking soda and 1/2 tsp salt. I sifted this all in, to make sure I had no lumps. As well, I think I used a little less of the sugar too. Stir in 1/2 cup chocolate chips into the flour mixture.

In another bowl, beat together 1 egg, 3/4 cup skim milk, 1/4 cup veg oil, 1-1/2 cups mashed bananas. Add this liquid mixture to the dry mixture, and stir...but only until it is just mixed. Don't over work it. Spoon into the muffin tin, and bake for 22 minutes. (Maybe your oven is a little different than mine, but 22 minutes was just perfect for me. Just make sure if you insert a clean and dry toothpick, or butter knife, it comes out without batter on it.)
Enjoy. And don't eat all 12 at one sitting.
Jaime

Why does everything take SO much time??

Hi
I have located a picture of by booth. This was at the Kids and Baby show here in Winnipeg at the convention center last weekend. Thank god my husband was able to build this for me. But it's amazing how long something like this takes...it was built Friday afternoon, and then we painted the trim and hung the hooks Friday night. I guess we got home at about 10pm....my mom was nice enough to come over and watch the kiddies so we could get it all done.

My brother-in-law helped Chris dismantle the booth Sunday night after the show, so I only had to bag up my bedding and take it home. Thanks to my hubby, for building my booth and helping me set it up (it looked great - pictures to follow once I find my camera...) And a big thanks to everyone who came by to say hello. I got lots of positive feedback, and it seems that people are loving my crib bedding and wishing I had some toddler and twin bedding sets available. Well, just in case I forgot to mention it, I DO custom work. Pricing and availability of course depends on what you are after, and what fabric you would like, but these things can all be figured out. Send me a quick email if you would like to discuss custom projects.

And, I can't believe how many entries I got for my baby blanket giveaway -- I have drawn the name and I will be emailing the winner shortly. Thanks to everyone for entering!

I am curious - what was your favorite booth/product at the show? I love meeting other business owners - a huge shout out to the Sling Sisters - 2 fabulous chicks with a fabulous product. For a little while, I had my little 2 month old at the show, and I was able to borrow one of their slings. Not only was it super comfortable, but it matched my outfit., and Isla's....if you can believe it! And we didn't even plan it that way! I met Carla, who is a local Stella and Dot jewelry rep - seriously sexy jewelry. (I fell in love with it, and will be hosting a jewelry party next month!) Lux for Sprouts had a great booth, and they were the presenting sponsor, so they had all sorts of great giveaways going on. Aileen at Fit4Two stroller fitness had a great spot too, and did some stroller fitness demos, which was cool. My girl, Erin, at SugarBaby Photo was out in full force, displaying her awesome photography - she always does a really nice job for me, so if you are in the market for a photographer, check her out. Uc Baby - if you just can't wait to see your little bundle, call Melissa at UC Baby and she can get you lined up for a 3D ultrsound - how neat is that? What else can I say? Those are only a few of the businesses that were there - if you missed the show this year, make sure you check it out next time!
Jaime

Always looking for something new...

Hi
I've attached a few photos of some new products I have been tinkering with. It's been awhile. In fact, it feels like forever since I have blogged. Isla Madeleine was born on December 11th at 11:16pm. What a quick delivery that was...thank god! I don't know how women can have a natural delivery with contraction after contraction....I didn't willingly choose to be drug free, but that's just how it worked out.

It's been a little crazy lately. Mikhail is 3, and super busy, and Isla is not super happy. She doesn't really sleep during the day unless she is being held, and even then , it is touch and go. I'm happy that Mikhail is really sweet with her, and even when she is screaming, he seems pretty cool with it.

I've attached a few photos. Her birth announcement was done by SugarBaby Photo.
www.sugarbabyphoto.com

Back to the grind..
Jaime

Does that dress still fit me?

Thought I would post this goofy photo....it's funny when you look at pictures of yourself - I look bigger than I remember. Let me explain - my mom grew up on a farm in Manitoba, and I have some relatives who still live out there. This church, is where my grandparents are buried, and every fall, we like to go out to the Fall Service and have a visit with some of my aunts and uncles. I love, love, love this cute little church - and some years, when there is a choir from Winnipeg who comes out to sing, there is standing room only. People squeeze into the pews, and stand at the back of the church, only moving to let the priest in. The last few years have been pretty good, since a lot of the service is in English, rather than Ukranian. I must admit, it's pretty hard to stay focused when you can't understand what the heck is going on. Stand up, sit down, stand up, kneel. I usually just follow the locals, and do what they do. I must admit, I am not a religious person, in the church-going sense, but I can appreciate the tradition, and the togetherness of the process.

Now, that being said, I must confess. The actual lunch, or "supper" after the service is something I can't stop thinking about all through the morning. The garlic pickles, and the perogies...oh, the perogies. I have never been one for homemade sausages (I can almost hear my husband cheering "yay...more for me!") but I have ALWAYS been a sucker for a good perogy. I have been spoiled, with my mom and some of my aunts making the best perogies around. I have been ruined for the store-bought perogy...I am not even satisfied with some of the local places who DO have some pretty good ones...but still...not.

My husband has fallen in love with the perogy - and he admits that he really didn't even know a good perogy until he tasted my family's cooking. He can't get enough - with fried onions, bacon, and sour cream, of course. However, my aunty has introduced us to eating boiled perogies with fried cream...it's kind of thick and luxurious like alfredo sauce, but very simply done...just cream and a little bit of onion. It's a totally different experience than the sour cream and bacon route, but still oh so fantastic.

Anyways, I am making myself hungry....

As I lay my head down to sleep this evening, I think I will send out a little shout out to my mom and my aunt, who hopefully will will pick up on my mental messaging..."please...make me some perogies."

Jaime

Oh how tired I am!

Good afternoon!
Here are a few recent pictures of me....I am currently 39 weeks and waiting. I must say - everybody had a fantastic time, adults included! April, who is the party hostess with the mostess, does everything from blowing bubbles and singing songs with the kiddies, to helping set out food and chatting with the other parents. The kids were super happy ripping around in the totally kid-friendly play areas, and I was super happy to sit by and watch! What a nice way to celebrate my little guy's big day - and I didn't have to clean my house, which is always a big hit with me!!
Jaime
www.babiesinbloom.ca

Another Happy Customer!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MmIL2_fvV2M/SvIIs0eIM9I/AAAAAAAAALE/uJr_VmeA8oM/s320/Vanessa%27s+Bedding+2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400388469262922706" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MmIL2_fvV2M/SvIIsc2KCVI/AAAAAAAAAK8/gUAkdeeF-0M/s320/Vanessa%27s+bedding.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400388462921255250" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MmIL2_fvV2M/SvIIsEoPOSI/AAAAAAAAAK0/5xmQOj8aV0Q/s320/CovingtonOverTheMoonPastel118C.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400388456420423970" />

Hi!
I thought I would show you a couple of pictures - I did a custom job for somebody a little while back. Right now I have a great promotion going on - for the month of October, you can buy any crib bedding set for 269.99! And you'll be entered to win a Chocolate Spice baby blanket with each crib set purchase. My crib sets are all beautiful (if I do say so myself!) and each set includes a crib skirt, 2 fitted sheets, a four-pc bumper pad set, and the crib blanket. (I personally think that if you don't have 2 fitted sheets, it won't take long for you to realize that you H-A-T-E doing laundry every 2 minutes - how on earth do babies make such a mess anyways???)

Also, I've been noodling around some different ideas for some other little items that I might want to include in Lavish Lamb's product lines. These more one-of-a-kind items will most likely be featured on my new etsy shop. ("Lavish Lamb is on Etsy??" you ask? Well, I just signed up and I am slowly working on stocking my Etsy store. Check out www.lavishlamb.etsy.com)

Maybe some cute, plush baby rattles? Maybe some striking swaddling blankies? When I wrote the title, I meant it sincerely, but thinking about what a gong show this past weekend was, I suppose I could have put quotations around "lovely" and used a more sarcastic tone!

The weekend started out well enough - Saturday morning breakfast and errands with my son and hubby - it's always nice to get out of the house when my husband is around...it's always easier if my son decides to have a fit in public! But, my son was an angel, and we had a nice morning zipping around town. I have no idea why, but we decided to go to Costco at about 12:30pm, and pick up a few things and have a bite to eat there. Yikes. Between the parking lot fiasco (people driving on the wrong side of the road to steal parking spots) and the mass of people actually in the store, I was ready to leave before we began. We ate our pizza standing up, as there were no seats, bought some groceries, and finally made our way home. Phew.
After we put away all the stuff we bought, I was making my way upstairs to put my son down for a nap, and low and behold, there was a wonderful puddle of water in our front entrance on the hardwoods. WHAT??? (Perhaps I should mention that we just had our roof redone within the last year..and it WAS NOT an inexpensive project.) So, the roof is leaking. Perfect. (We currently have work being done in our house right now - plumbers are changing our the boiler and running water lines to go from steam heat to water....at this point, I am seeing NO end in sight for home renos...the roof is NOW a problem again, and I have no heat in the house!)
I think I yelped out when I saw the water in all over the floor, so my husband came running to me, probably thinking I was going into premature labor or something. So we got a bunch of towels and mopped it all up, and my husband was up on a chair, wiping down the drips coming down our oak woodwork. I, of course, am already envisioning the worst case scenario for the spring thaw this year - a mold encased ceiling falling on my head or my house caving in - my imagination is very active!
But, we tried to stay positive. We ended up having an impromptu snowball fight after my son got up from his nap, and went for a quick walk to pick up some pastries from a local French eatery. Our spirits were lifted.
Sunday morning we played and had a leisurely breakfast. My husband needed to get a few old pipes cut out of the basement for the plumbers, so he went to work. He came upstairs a little while later to wash out a giant, massive gash he had in his arm - yay, stitches! So off he went to the hospital. Five hours later, he returned, with 4 stitches and a headache - the whole day gone and nothing accomplished in the basement.
So, we rushed off to my inlaws for a nice Thanksgiving dinner. We ate, and relaxed, and visited with uncles and aunts and cousins. Mikhail had a really fun time - the poor little guy was so excited playing at Nana's he actually made himself ill! (He was fine instantly, and insisted that his tummy was "happy.") We had dinner at my mom's last night - and it was yummy! Lots of good stuff to eat (my mom has perfected a lazy casserole that mimics the flavors and textures of perogies...mmmnnn.)
Overall, the weekend was good...yummy food, and good family!
I suppose we can always get a new roof! And I am sure we will have heat at some point soon...
Jaime

Looking for a cool online store? We both decided that we wanted to see something lighthearted, so we saw Julie and Julia - the movie about Julia Child's struggle to get her French-cooking masterpiece published and the woman who decided to cook every one of Julia's recipes in one year and blog the whole process. We both really enjoyed it. And, of course, I got totally inspired and I had to go out and buy Julia's cookbook. (Those who know me, know I am obsessed with cook books and cooking!) Since I have been pregnant, my cooking has been less than inspirational, to put it nicely, so why not throw my husband a bone and cook him a really good meal?
So, I chose Beef Bourguignon, and a chocolate almond cake with super luscious chocolate icing. Holy. It was worth the effort! My husband gobbled it up, and my son enjoyed it all too. The beef takes a long time to complete, and although perhaps it seems a little much, every ingredient and step is vital to the success of the whole dish. The best complement is that my husband said it was the best beef stew he has ever had. So, I will make it again for sure!
The cake was so delicious too - folding in egg whites makes it so light a wonderful. The icing is simply melted chocolate, a little rum, and butter......how can you go wrong with that?
So, see the movie, and get inspired to do a little French cooking....now if only I could enjoy some nice French wine! Maybe in the New year!
Jaime

What to do with all those veggies from the garden??

Good afternoon!
What a busy week it has been! Business meetings, runny noses, and an over abundance of produce from my aunty's farm! I have no problem with having lots of tomatoes and cucumbers...those always get used...but what about those lesser-loved veggies, like eggplants?? (I had to think long and hard about it, for sure.)
So, after going through lots of my cookbooks for a recipe, or at least, inspiration, I came up empty handed. My next step of course, is always www.epicurious.com. And here is what I found:

Roasted Red Pepper and Eggplant dip
1 - 3/4 lb eggplant
2 lbs red bell peppers
4 tbsp olive oil
4 garlic cloves, minced
3 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
salt and pepper to taste

(I had lots of eggplants, so I tripled the recipe. And of course I added in an extra red pepper that had seen better days.)

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Oil the eggplant and red peppers and roast on a pan for 30-40 minutes, until the veggies are blackened and very soft. You'll have to turn them periodically. And make sure to you use a pan with shallow sides, because there will some water that comes out of the veggies. After everything is roasted, place them in a bowl or baking dish and cover with plastic wrap - it seems like an unnecessary step, but as the veggies cool under the cling wrap, they are super easy to peel the skins off....and that's the next step, coincidentally enough. (Don't rush the cooling, I beg you! Unless you want to spend the rest of your day with very tender, burned fingers!) Put the skinned veggies in a food processor, and add the oil, garlic, lemon and jalapeno. Whirl away to your desired consistency. (I have chosen to make mine very smooth...and I added some extra jalapeno, because I like it with some good kick.) Add salt and pepper to taste.

Put the puree in a saucepan and cook, on low for 15-20 minutes - this will help evaporate any extra liquid and also concentrate the flavors. Mine is on the stove, as we speak. I can't wait to serve this dip with warmed pita wedges. Oh, and I want to try adding goat cheese to the dip and stuffing large pasta shells to bake in the oven....or maybe using wonton wrappers to make my own ravioli...or tossing pasta in the dip and serving it with other roasted veggies....oh gosh, I have to go..apparently I am hungry!!!
Jaime

Cocoon Couture...a must see!

Ok, ok. (Good news for all you out-of-towners...they have a fantastic online store at www.luxforsprouts.com.) I really like Lux For Sprouts because their lineup of unique and beautiful baby clothing, toddler clothing and toys is astounding! They also carry some stylish "mommy" products, like swanky diaper bags and slings - I mean, we still need to make a statement, right?

Lux is owned and operated by a sweet mom and daughter pair, who are not only stylish themselves, but just about the nicest gals you'll ever meet. I suppose that is why I am very pleased that Lux for Sprouts is carrying some of my Lavish Lamb bedding sets.
I have attached a few pictures of some of their very cool, and very necessary line of products. (By the way, their baby and toddler clothing is so wonderful...your child will be the best dressed, for sure!)

Lavish Lamb Bedding in Primrose, Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper bag, wooden cars (Mikhail's favorite), Phil and Teds stroller....
I could go on and on, but maybe you should check our their site for yourselves - give youself sometime though...there's so much to see!
Jaime

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lavishlamb.blogspot.com/2009/09/lux-for-sprouts-what-great-boutique.html' title='Lux For Sprouts! All the instructors were on hand to answer questions and play with all the kiddies. Lots of moms and dads were registering for classes, like Infant Massage, Bouncing Babies Fitness, music classes, birthing workshops and more!

Miss April, the lady behind Babies in Bloom, has an extensive Montessori background, and a love for all things "baby"! As well, all of her instructors are charming and hands-on. Mikhail and I had a great time. Babies in Bloom also hosts birthday parties, which I think is a fantastic idea (no cleaning up afterward!!) In fact, I like April's birthday party planning so much, that Mikhail's 3rd birthday will be at Babies In Bloom this November (we're doing it a few weeks ahead of schedule in case our new addition shows up a little early!) Not only is the actual set up at BIB totally safe, child-friendly, and fun, but April does a little scheduled playtime with the kids too...which leaves some time for the adults to chill out and relax, which is great. And of course, I have some pictures!

Check out Babies in Bloom for your child's next party, or sign up for one of the many fun classes available! www.babiesinbloom.ca
Jaime

Fit4Two moms and babies work out classes!

Hello!
This past Friday morning, in the Winnipeg drizzling rain, Mikhail and I went out to a Fit4Two exercise class. Aileen, a cute, petite (lucky girl!) mama of twins led our class. I was a bit shocked at how gung-ho all the participants were - which I suppose, is a must, if you are going to work out in the great outdoors - rain, mosquitos and all!!

Aileen has started up a Fit4Two franchise here is Winnipeg, and was offering a free class to get people off the couch and out the door. (The website is www.fit4two.ca.) So how could I resist?

We started off at a local community center by doing speed walking laps, out babies content in there strollers. (Mikhail, being 2.5 yrs, needed a few Hot Wheels and some intermittent snacks to stay settled!) Off we went to park our strollers and do a quick jog - that got our blood pumping! We continued to another community center, stopping a long the way to work lunge, squat and do upper-body exercises with the elastic bands Aileen brought along. The grand finale, before our speed walk back to our starting point, was stair-running at a local school. Phew! I had a nice sweat going! Our class ended with stretching and some core work back at the center (this part, indoors.) The hour went so quickly, and everybody had a good time and a lot of laughs. That makes working out, for me, anyways, almost enjoyable!!!

This class makes it easy to get some exercise into your busy day, and you don't have to worry about getting a sitter. You can stop at any time to tend to your little one (or little ones - one lady have 4 kids with her!) and all fitness levels can join.
Take a look at some pictures...Mikhail did some exercising too!

Thanks Aileen!

Jaime

Nanny Pickle - cool, hip and cheeky-good fun!

Hi Everyone!
I have found a site that I MUST share with you! Nanny Pickle has made my day! At www.nannypickle.com.au, you will find some fantastic collections. Let me tell you that as soon as I clicked onto Nanny Pickle's site, I was compelled to enter...something about it just captured my attention. Not only does it have a beautiful, vintage feel, but heaven forbid I disobey "Nanny." ( I can almost picture a matronly lady, with long skirts and a bun...stern and proper, charming and sweet!)
The Bad Bunny collection is utterly clever and cheeky...remember all the things our moms lectured us about when we were children? "Don't play with matches," or "Don't run with scissors" are now not only familiar warnings our parents doled out, but they are sayings printed out on lovely, cozy clothes for our babes and kiddies.
The Mod Babe collection is equally smart - what would your baby say if she could utter the words? Maybe, "don't hate me because I'm beautiful," or "dribbler." Very sweet and fun, indeed.
The Nursery collection will definitely add charm and whimsy to your baby's nursery - fun growth charts, artwork and more.
Nanny Pickle even has her "Papier Collection," which is very vintage with beautiful scroll work and imagery. I would love to get a baby shower invitation from Nanny!
I have attached some photos - I think you will agree that Nanny Pickle has some very wonderful things!
You should check out Nanny's site...it's very lovely indeed!
Jaime

Little Miss Diva....this site is totally "diva-licious"!

Hi!
I think that surfing the net is fun, and shopping online is ever better!
So, I have decided that whenever I come across a site that I think is neat, cool, or happening, I will "blog it forward" and do a shout out! I have come across a very worthy site - www.littlemissdiva.com. Jen is a busy work-at-home mom like me, and as she puts it, she "fell in love with being a mom and wanted to be home with (her) kids." She saw a niche in the market and went after it - making girly hair clips, head bands, tutus, bows and more. Her site is fun, and totally girly! (Maybe I'll have girl this time around and my "girly" instinct will kick in too!!)

I have a few photos here for you to check out...but you should go take a peek at her site..it's totally cool with a super-fun vibe.
<img style="cursor: pointer; I could only avoid looking at all the leaves dropping in my yard for so long...

The last few weeks have been busy - as all you local Winnipeggers know, we have had a lot of rain! So, when the sun was shining, those few days, I was out making the most of it.

I have a few pictures to share with you. Mikhail and I went to the zoo with some friends, and we also went to the "splashpad" and ran around in the sprinklers. (Well, Mikhail didn't do as much running through the sprinklers as he did away from them. Apparently, the water was too cold...)
Although the sun was out and the birds were chirping, there was a fall-time feel in the air. And truthfully, I am ok with it, now. I am due in December, so cooler weather is agreeing with me these days!

As well, Mikhail had her orientation at his nursery school...oh I feel sad! His first "real" day is on Thursday, when I drop him off and leave him for a few hours. I can't believe how far away it feels - we went to Barbados for 2 weeks and it was heavenly. (What a cute little bum my boy has!)

After much debate, we decided to stay at a resort hotel for our time there. We thought it might be nice having all sorts of meal options and things available to us, considering we had our son (barely 2 years old at the time) with us.

For the first week, we stayed just outside of Speightstown. It is a cute little town, within walking distance from our hotel. We had the best lunch at the Fisherman's Pub - A very casual, local place, that served enormous helpings of all things "Bajan". I'm talking macaroni pie (I thought I died and went to heaven), cou cou, flying fish fritters, and numerous other baked and fried fishes and meats. I think the lady there thought my hubby was too thin, because his plate was piled so high, it could have easily fed 2 hungry men! (And he ate it all!)
The people in Speightstown were really friendly and I was interested to know that some of the architecture there is some of the oldest on the island.

For our second week, we went to a sister resort in St. Lawrence Gap (which is a really lively and busy strip of restaurants and bars.) Our place was in walking distance, but it felt really remote, which was nice. I was really impressed with this resort's lunch time buffet - I know buffets are usually not that great, but they had a huge assortment of freshly grilled fish and meat, and a ton of freshly steamed veggies and salads. I also liked all the fresh fruit they had out. I think the three of us had one of our best trips yet, and I would SO love to go back. But, Barbados isn't necessarily affordable to go for 2 weeks every year. We'll see if we can make it work for our trip this coming winter.
If you want to visit some of the most lovely beaches, and meet some wonderful people, and eat yummy food, Barbados is for you. Please try a flying fish sandwich. And some macaroni pie. And some local beer. And go to the Oistins Fish fry (every Friday night.) And go to Harrison's Caves. And hang out in Bridgetown. Ok, I could go on and on. (Sigh.)
Happy day dreaming,
Jaime

Fabulous Italian in Winnipeg!

No, I am not referring to my friend Greg, but to his restaurant (although Greg IS fabulous!) Bellissimo on Waverly is always a favorite eatery of mine because the service and food is excellent (and last night was no exception!)

I went for an impromptu dinner last night with my hubby, my son and my father-in-law. My father-in-law had a herb-crusted salmon fillet topped with a lemon basil cream sauce, which was served with a mushroom and sun-dried tomato risotto and asparagus. (Yumm!) My husband had one of their specials - which he raved about - beef tenderloin in a blue cheese crust, served with lovely little roasted baby potatoes, asparagus, broccoli, and grilled red pepper. (Just so you know, my husband doesn't eat blue cheese ever, and actually doesn't really like it, but Chef Greg I guess just knows what he is doing, because my hubby said it was EXCELLENT!) I also had a special - lobster ravioli with a drizzle of Alfredo sauce. On top of the perfectly seasoned ravioli, there were garlic prawns and a little nest of sauteed spinach. I also loved the roasted grape tomatoes that adorned the plate...a perfect burst of fresh summer flavor! My son had a ham pizza - which he devoured with pure excitement. I can't say enough about this place - not only do we always have a really enjoyable time there, but the homey, yet upscale atmosphere keeps us coming back for more!
Happy eating!
Jaime

My baby's not a baby anymore!

Good morning!
I am not sure why all of a sudden this has hit me, but last night I woke up at about 1 30am, suddenly surprised at the thought of my son going to his nursery school orientation next week. Yes, that's right, my little guy is going to be on his own! Well, I suppose I should be perfectly honest - I am a suck...apparently a big suck. Mikhail is only going for 2 mornings a week, so it's not every day or anything. (That's what I had to tell myself last night, in order to relax myself!)

Most moms I have spoken to were thrilled at the prospect of having a few hours to themselves when their kids went to nursery school, and I am sure once I get a taste of it, I'll like it too. But right now, I am not so sure!
Somehow, even though currently I am always wishing for more hours in the day, I am worried I won't know what to do with myself...

I think Mikhail will probably handle this adjustment better than I will!
Jaime

BDI Ice Cream!

I love seeing the sun outside, and this past weekend, I think everybody heaved a collective sigh of relief - finally, we had a wonderful, hot, sunny weekend! It's too bad it is already the end of August, but I digress..
My husband and I took out son out to his family's cabin over the weekend, which was a lot of fun. And on the way back, we hit the BDI for some creamy, luscious ice cream. Every time I go, (which probably only ends up being once per summer) I am reminded of all the times I went there as a kid. Waiting in line, I dream about getting the biggest, stickiest concoction, but I always settle on a soft-serve cone (and sometimes I even get a flavor other than vanilla!) So, after waiting patiently, my son told me he would like a "coco" cone, which in Mikhail-speak, is chocolate. My husband got his strawberry sundae, I got a chocolate/vanilla twist, (and Mikhail of course, got his chocolate cone,) and then we ventured off to gobble them down. We walked across the bridge, and watched the boats go by - some just cruising, some pulling water-skiiers. Even though we haven't had the best summer, (I know, I could say a lot worse...) our visit to the BDI put me right into the summer spirit. Now, if I can keep that going until June....
Jaime

How do colors impact your little one?

I was doing some reading recently, and came across an article on Buzzle.com that I found interesting. I have always liked learning about how colors affect us - our moods, appetites, sleep. In my conversations with other parents, sometimes they have chosen nursery colors not based on what necessarily is their favorite color, but based on color research - which colors increase developmental growth, induce a state of calm -- that kind of thing. So here is a little breakdown for you, if this is something you are interested in too!

1. Yellow - a calming color, that has the ability to create a warm and sunny feeling. Apparently, yellow is known to stimulate muscle activity. (Note to self - do not choose yellow for the new baby's room - this kid is already kicking up a storm and keeping me up all night!)
2. White - white represents purity, and also symbolizes peace and joy. Because white reflects back most of the light (rather than absorbing it) this will make any room feel larger and brighter. Personally, I think you have to be careful with white, because your baby's room might feel a little too clinical, unless you have some lovely colored accents and bedding to warm things up.
3. Blue - blue produces a calming effect and gets the body ready for sleep. I say girls can have blue rooms too - it's all about how you accessorize! With blue's ability to promote peace, wisdom and confidence, it's a great color for a nursery or kids room.
4. Green - who doesn't love the look of a lush green park in summertime? Green refreshes the spirit and is thought to reinforce self-esteem and give hope. ( I love sage green!) Green might a be a good one if you are looking to redo a teen's room - who didn't have periods of self-doubt during those formative years??!!
5. Red - some might say that red is a no-no because it will over-stimulate your babe. This article says that reds increase desire, excitability and passion (ok, so maybe not for your teen's room..stick with green!) The article goes on to say that red can be used as an accent color...I think this is a nice compromise - let's keep the excitability in check, but maybe red can be a vibrant and fun accent in your little bundle's room.
6. Purple - darker shades of purple typically represent royalty, power and luxury. However, these dark tones can also evoke feelings of sadness, and frustration (too much navy can have this effect as well.) Lighter shades are better - they can create a more peaceful and nostalgic room. (I would like to say, that I have seen some beautiful girls rooms done up in a light lavender, with a chocolate accent...really super!)
7. Earth Tones - grey, brown, beige. This article says that these are excellent choices for hyperactive children, because these colors represent warmth, comfort and relaxation. (Again, in my personal option, accent colors are super important here. It's no fun being beige.)

So there you have it. Some insider information on color and how these choices can affect your child. But don't take it too seriously. I think it's more important to have some fun planning the room. I would say that whatever color you choose, do a patch in a few coats. (The final color after it has dried might look a lot different in one coat versus two.) Keep the walls on the lighter side of the color and that way you have many more options with your bedding, flooring and accessories.

I can't stress enough the patch test though...I once picked a gold color off a paint chip, and started madly painting without testing it, and after I furiously painted a whole room, I hated the color. It literally made me not want to go into the room. (Guess who went back to the paint store that same day to get some more paint samples????)

Have fun picking your colors, and if you really can't decide, do what I did, and build your color scheme off a fabulous crib bedding set...
Jaime

SavvyMom Mom Entrepreneur of the Year Award

SavvyMom Mom Entrepreneur of the Year Award

Posted using ShareThis

Consumer Trends in Baby Products

Good morning! With the excessive rain we have been having lately, I have been doing some reading...I thought I would share some info with you regarding consumer trends in baby products. These are from ConsumerReports.org.
1. More Functional Designs - products have to be durable and user friendly. This is why I decided, after much thought, to make my bumper pads in 4 pieces, rather than one long pad. It is much easier to remove one side to clean, rather than having to remove one big, long piece. (And really, who likes having to undo and reposition the bumper pad ties!)
2. More Stylish Choices - "manufacturers have upped the style ante." You can say that again. Take a look around at all the cool looking baby gear out there! This article mentions strollers that are accented with cool colors, like periwinkle or cognac (mine is trimmed with celery green - very nice!)
I think this is what I longed for originally when I was looking for bedding for my son. Since nothing jumped out at me, Lavish Lamb was born!
3. What kind of statement do you want to make? The article goes into aesthetics, and is "the statement" important to you? What look do you want?
4. Greater attention to safety - specifically with products that are designed to protect your baby from germs - shopping cart protectors, disposable placemats etc. I guess the thing to consider here, is where do you draw the line? You have to decide what is right for your baby and your family. I know that I didn't use any shopping cart protectors - I don't think I could stomach hauling any more baby gear around with me!

With respect to bedding, a hot topic is bumper pads - to use or not use, that is the question! I used them, and I removed them as soon as my son started rolling around in his crib. There are people that are totally against them, and the government actually recommends that manufacturers attach a tag to them, warning consumers that they should be removed once your child can sit up unaided. Kids are too darn smart, and very quickly figure out that bumper pads make great launching pads, right out of the crib! Again, I guess it comes down to what is right for you and your baby.

According to ConsumerReports.org, it is really important that whatever bedding you use in your crib, that the mattress is firm, the fitted crib sheets is snug and not loose, and your blanket should be kept waist-height (tucked in on either side under the mattress.)

So much to consider! It's kind of scary to think about what our parents did with us as infants - one of my friends was actually driven around in, not a car seat (they weren't around then) but in a banana box in the back of the car! (She turned out ok, though!)

I'd love to hear what you think about safety issues. What is important to you?
Jaime

Rain , Rain, Go AWAY!

Well, I am beginning to lose my belief in the "Hot Winnipeg Summer." (Maybe I should add "Dry" in there?) I remember when I was young, and summers were long and HOT...melting hot. And when it rained, it poured, and then the sun came back out. (Oh gosh...I'm telling "when I was young" stories.)

"Maybe the weather forecast will be wrong, and it will be nice today," I tell myself. Then I can see outside that that is not likely. Oh well. What do we do know? Somebody once told me that when life you gives you lemons, make lemonade...and add vodka to it.

But, if for example, you're pregnant, or it's not 5pm yet, vodka is out of the question! (I know, I know, everyone's "5pm" is different....)

Now it's time to think creatively. Here are some of my favorite things to do when it rains:

1. It's Library time! At least my son is happy to browse and I can grab a few books myself from the adult section before we're into Caillou.
2. Dance Party. No kidding. (I am admitting this, really?) Put on your favorite tunes and give 'er.
3. Crafts - I use this term loosely. Crafts in my house can be taping your face into scary or funny expressions, or finger painting with pudding. (Save all your cardboard egg holders and toilet paper rolls for crafts too..)
4. Organize - ok, ok, not so fun. But, with some music on, you and your kid(s) (depending on their age) might get into going through the pantry or kitchen junk drawers. (It's actually fun guessing what's in the pantry's mystery tins that have somehow lost their labels...)
5. Lunch like a lady of leisure. Well, lunch with your little ones is not so leisurely, but it's a way to get out of the house, and somebody else does the cooking. Of course, going to a kid friendly place is key!
6. We all do it....you know, watch movies! Sometimes, the old TV is your best friend!
Oh, I hear my little guy....must continue this later!
Jaime

More adorable baby photos by SugarBaby!

This shot has the fabric from my Morning Glory blanket in it, followed by Woodfern, Temple Garland, and Happy Dots. Especially when they are downstairs and I am upstairs, able to work on the computer! (Sometimes it's hard to get a quiet minute to even check emails....you work-at-home moms know what I mean!)

These days, it is hard to get going in the morning...20 weeks pregnant and my morning sickness is finally becoming bearable! But, I still feel SO tired..I can't wait to get my energy back. (At least for awhile, until the aches, pains and restless nights of the third trimester arrive. (Never mind the SLEEPLESS nights that will accompany my new little one, in say, early December...)

This morning, feeling pretty good for a tired and nauseated pregnant woman, I decided to pack up and take Mikhail to the zoo. He really enjoyed the peacocks and flamingos, and I really enjoyed watching his excitement grow, especially as a crowd of prairie dogs gathered in our path. They were all up on their hind feet, looking at us. Mikhail said "hi mouses" and one actually came right up and sniffed his foot. I love Savvy Mom's site, and this past spring, Lavish Lamb's Chestnut Branches bedding set was displayed at their booth at the Babytime Show in Toronto. I couldn't be happier to be included in the group of cool chicks in the award nominee pool. If you would like to vote for me, you can go to my bio (and voting button) at the link below. I have made the jump into blogging! I must admit, I find the idea little daunting, but I suppose the more I blog, the easier I will find it.

I guess the first thing I should do is chat about what has been going on with Lavish Lamb. Well, it has been a busy summer! In case you haven't been to my site recently, Lux for Sprouts on Academy Rd (Winnipeg, MB) has added my bedding to their hip collection of products. I couldn't be happier to partner with them.
As well, Lavish Lamb has partnered with Sugar Baby Photo. All of my photos are done by Erin over at Sugar Baby, and I am thrilled with her work! I'll post some of her photos next.
I also am in the current issue of Winnipeg Women, which is great. Thanks to WW for including me in their mag!
Jaime
